Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of her two appearances on Roseanne. However, her parents did not let her perform until she was an adult, for fear of the negative effects that stress could be able to have on their daughter. Perry said that she was shy to act in high school but began acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry made her debut in New York after graduation, landing minor role on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry go back to California and find work as a theater actress. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. The show featured the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared nine times in The Family, an ABC film The Family, in 2016. Her father played her on the ABC show Scandal. In the same year, she appeared as a younger character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a younger version. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite being a fan of this role.
